The main protective gases in laser welding include nitrogen (N2) and argon (Ar). Due to their different characteristics, their effects on the weld are also different. When used as auxiliary gas for laser welding machines, the following factors need to be considered.
Can be used for stainless steel welding. Under the action of laser, the degree of ionization is average, but the formation of plasma cloud can be reduced, thereby improving the effective utilization of the laser. At a certain temperature, nitrogen will chemically react with carbon steel, aluminum alloys, etc. to form nitrides, which will increase the brittleness of the weld and reduce the toughness. Nitrogen is used for welding carbon steel. But when welding stainless steel, if nitrogen is used, the stainless steel will chemically react with the nitrogen, and the nitrides generated can increase the strength of the weld. This is beneficial to improving the mechanical properties of the weld, so nitrogen can be used as a protective gas when welding stainless steel.
Argon (Ar) is commonly used for welding and is cost-effective. After laser application, the degree of ionization is relatively high, which will cause certain adverse factors to the formation of plasma atoms and also affect the effective use of laser. However, argon gas (Ar) has very low activity and is difficult to react chemically with common metals. Its cost is not high and its density is relatively high. It is easy to sink to the top of the molten pool and effectively protects the molten pool. Therefore, argon (Ar) is used as the traditional shielding gas.
The selection of protective gas must not only consider its quality and effect, but also its production cost and economic benefits. Ultimately, the choice between nitrogen and argon will depend on the specific requirements of the laser welding application.
